Stammering/Stuttering

Stammer and stutter are two words that mean exactly the same. The causes of stammering are complex and individual. Stammering usually develops in childhood and the difficulties can range from mild to severe. About 1% of adults stammer across all cultures.

The speaker knows exactly what they want to say but there is some kind of interruption in the flow of speech. The stammer can be highly variable and unpredictable. Individuals may be fluent in some situations and not others, totally fluent on some days and stammering severely on others. The stammers we hear are the recognisable aspect of this disability but there are also hidden thoughts and feelings that are often not recognised, but are an equally important part of the disability.
