Spring/Summer 2012 Workshops for Secondary Schools

Supporting Students with Speech, Language and Communication Difficulties.

Our practical ½ day workshops provide the ideal opportunity for Secondary SENCOs, teachers and teaching assistants to refresh and up-skill.

1. Supporting students who stammer  – Tuesday 20th March or Friday 22nd June
Stammering can have a significant impact on a student’s academic performance as well as their social communication skills. Their confidence and self esteem in all areas of school life may also be affected.
  • Supporting the student who stammers in class
  • Making reasonable adjustments for assessment
  • Dealing with teasing and bullying
 2. Introduction to Developing Vocabulary (Part 1)  – Wednesday 23rd May
Vocabulary is an essential skill for learning in school and for successful social interaction and one of the best predictors of academic attainment.
  • Learn about vocabulary development
  • Learn methods to teach vocabulary
  • Practise implementing some strategies
  3. Developing vocabulary effectively (Part 2) – Wednesday 4th July
 (You must have attended Vocabulary Part 1)
  • Review theory and methods for teaching vocabulary from introductory session
  • Explore extended examples
  • Discuss and troubleshoot implementing the strategies in your school.
 4. Transition- Supporting students with SLCN – Wednesday 18th July
Transition for children with SLCN can be particularly challenging. Additional support is needed during the transfer to secondary school as well as in preparation for life beyond school.

Talkcoach has extensive experience of working within education settings. The team has contributed to recent projects commissioned  by the DfE (Better Communication Research Programme and Stammering Information Programme), the Nuffield Foundation (Enhancing Language and Communication in Secondary Schools) and the Communication Trust (Transition to secondary school: supporting  pupils with speech, language and communication needs).
